Biography of Thomas R. Dean

Thomas Dean received a B.Sc.(Hon) and M.Sc. in Computational Science from the University of Saskatchewan in 1986 and 1988 respectively. In 1993 he obtained a Ph.D. in Computing and Information Science from Queen's University at Kingston, Canada. He worked with air traffic control interfaces and simulations at the Royal Military College of Canada during a brief break in his Ph.D. studies.

Tom continued at Queen's as a post doctoral fellow in 1994 and 1995, where he worked on formalization of design methods with Dr. David Lamb. In 1995 became a Sr. Research Scientist at Legasys Corp. in Kingston. At Legasys he worked on design recovery and automated transformation of legacy systems. Dr. Dean worked on the CPPX project at the University of Waterloo during the early part of 2001. In mid 2001, Tom joined Queen's University, and is currently an Assistant Professor with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Dr. Dean is also an adjunct associate professor at the Royal Military College of Canada.

From September 2007 to June 2008, Dr. Dean was on sabbatical as a visiting researcher at Fondazione Bruno Kessler in Trento, Italy. During this sabbatical he worked a project transforming the core code used by the Italian Credit Unions from a legacy language to Java.

From July 2014 to June 2015, Dr. Dean was on sabbatical visiting at École Polytechniqe. This sabbatical examined the use of linguistic models to detect modifications to network traffic in limited environments.

Dr. Dean is a member of the Computer Society of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), and  the Association of Professional Engineers and Geologists of Saskatchewan (APEGS).
